Mesothelioma is a very aggressive form of cancer, and one of the reasons that it has such a low survival rate is because it is not typically diagnosed until the disease is fairly advanced. While this is often true, no one is immune from this cancer-from politicians to entertainers, athletes to military commanders. Mesothelioma is generally thought of as a working man's disease. Progressive therapies are now being developed through the International Mesothelioma Program at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital and is a world-renown medical expert on the disease. Cancer centers have initiated hundreds of clinical trials in recent years to help mesothelioma patients find a therapy that works for them while still working towards a cure for future patients. Several therapies have emerged in recent years that have extended survival rates to levels previously thought to be impossible. Currently, there is no known cure for asbestos cancer but several mesothelioma treatment regimens have proven to be successful in helping the patient avoid pain and discomfort caused by the disease. Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer but can be managed with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery. The only recognized cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos, though other factors, such as smoking may increase the likeliness of the disease in certain individuals. Who is at risk for Mesothelioma. For those diagnosed with mesothelioma, an asbestos-related cancer of the lining of the abdominal cavity, known as the peritoneum and pericardial mesothelioma originates in the pericardium, which lines the heart.
